  • Addressing Possible Dangers of LED Bulbs
    May 07, 2018

LED light bulbs have become integrated into our society as a desire to become more environmentally friendly. While this can be beneficial, there are dangers with these new bulbs. These dangers are minor, and can usually be avoided by proper care and handling. Nonetheless, it is important to address these possible concerns. LED is an acronym that stands for “light-emitting diode.” If you have never heard of the term ‘diode,’ it simply means a device that allows electricity to flow one way, but inhibits its flow the other way. These light-emitting bulbs have been becoming increasingly competitive with their traditional CFL light bulbs. However, LED light bulbs may contain toxic substances, such as, but not limited to, lead, arsenic, and many other dangerous substances. As of now, these light bulbs are the future to becoming more environmentally friendly, and lowering energy costs over time, there is an aim to find better alternatives to light energy source, that do not deplete our natural resources, or add to the serious global warming issue we already have. Recent testing has shown that the worst type of LED lights, are the low intensity red LED lights, which contain eight times the amount of acceptable neurotoxins. Clearly, this is a cause for concern, as neurotoxins can contribute to serious illnesses, such as cancer. The lowest lead toxicity occurred in white light LED bulbs. However, they contain high amounts of nickel, which can cause severe allergic reactions in certain individuals. Additionally, the high level of copper present can pose a threat to marine life and other aquatic life if they are not properly disposed of. If the light bulbs break, it is safe to properly clean them up, by sweeping them up with gloves and a mask, and disposing of all the materials used to clean up the mess in hazardous waste.

These risks associated with the LED light bulbs are considered minor, and certainly the benefits outweigh these risks. Some of the benefits that come from using these light bulbs include, lower overall cost, lower energy bills, and better lighting. There is a lower long run cost that comes with purchasing these innovative light bulbs, as they are initially more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but they do not need to be changed as often as traditional light bulbs, thus requiring less maintenance, and less of a need to purchase more of them. Additionally, lower energy bills will result from the use of these bulbs, because they do not use as much energy as the traditional incandescent bulbs. LED light bulbs typically have higher output range, and a higher wattage, thus making the room feel brighter.
